Captain Britain meets The Guardians of the Universe

Here's another great mash-up from the 'Super Team Family' Blog - Captain Britain refusing to be a Green Lantern. A while back I did a piece on how The Captain Britain Corps could be Marvel's version of The Green Lantern Corps as defenders of the Multiverse, so this post by STF is quite a pleasing to my Captain Britain heart.

Check out the Super Team Family Blog, it's a fun Blog to follow...

Hero Art Nouveau Wow! Art by Megan Lara

I came across the latest issue of Willow (#2) which has cover art by Megan Lara, and was hit with instant WOW! One of my favourite art styles is Art Nouveau, especially Mucha, and obviously I love the occasional hero, or 200, so coming across an artist that combines the two, sent me into artistic geek heaven. Check out below a few of the wonderful works of art she has produced featuring some heroes you may recognise...

Here's the cover to Willow #2 which drew me to her art.

For more of her art check out her site... http://meganlara.com/

Now all I need her to do is a triple original Excalibur special, with Meggan, Sat-Yr-9 & Cerise, all in her Mucha influenced style, then I can die a happy man!

Who is Kid Briton?

Marvel have announced upcoming event, 'Avengers Arena'. A Battle Royale type story involving 16 youngsters from the Marvel universe, some known, some not so well known, all fighting against each other. One of these unknown heroes is a character called Kid Briton... Who is he? and why does he look like a right jerk? All we know is, he represents House Braddock.

Avengers Arena is all Arcade's doing, a bigger version of one of his 'Murderworld' attempts, but on an island, very Battle Royale! This time there's actually going to be murder, which never actually happens in Murderworld.

Can't really see the point in this story, especially if some of the heroes are going to actually die, and wouldn't the grown-up heroes notice them missing.

For the full insight into this follow this link from an article on Newsarama.com

Union Jack and The Freedom's Five

Upon one of my many searches of the internet I came across this little gem! A bright shining star from 1976, Invaders issue #7, to be precise. To be honest I didn't even know they existed, very briefly it seems, but exist they did.

In 1976 The Freedom Five were introduced to the world of Marvel. They were a group of costumed heroes that fought against the Germans in world war one. There seems to be conflicting information to what war they were actually in, world war one, or two, The invaders were in WWII, where The Freedom Five appeared.

The team had heroes representing three different countries, allied against the Germans. From the UK you had Union Jack, The Silver Squire, and Sir Steel, from America you had The Phantom Eagle, and from France you had The Crimson Cavalier.

Alas they only appeared in three issues, but I now feel the need to track these issues down.

I also found this excellent piece of art by Geoff Isherwood of The Freedom Five.

Excalibur chosen by the fans

For a year I ran a vote, just for fun, on Excalibur. If Marvel decided to reinvent Britain's premier team, who should be in it? I picked thirty heroes, some had been members of Excalibur previously, or had connections to Excalibur, or Captain Britain.

Captain Britain got the most amount of votes, which is no surprise, and I then picked the next six most voted for to make up the team, seven's always a good, lucky team number.

Here's Excalibur, as chosen by those that voted...
Captain Britain, Meggan, Black Knight, Pete Wisdom, Spitfire, Union Jack, and Lionheart.

There were quite a few close contenders for inclusion in the team, and these could be used as guest stars, or even have a storyline built around them, involving Excalibur. The next, best of the rest if you like were...
Micromax, Kylun, and Dark Angel.

I included every ClanDestine member, but alas they didn't fare too well, the most votes going to Crimson Crusader. Maybe there could be an Exclaibur academy, where young heroes like Imp, and her brother, Crimson Crusader could enrol.

Like I said, it was just for fun but, how good would it be? Drawn by Alan Davis, and written by Paul Cornell, but don't change Cap's costume Paul. Hell I might even write it, and submit it to Marvel... we can all dream!

Captain Britain, A Secret Avenger No More!

NYCC: Secret Avengers Getting a Relaunch

Nick Spencer and Luke Ross take over Secret Avengers.

With Rick Remender's run on Secret Avengers coming to a close, we've been wondering what will become of the series, particularly in light of all the Marvel NOW! craziness going on. Today at their Avengers panel during NYCC, Marvel unveiled that Secret Avengers would relaunch with a new #1 in February, this time under the leadership of writer Nick Spencer and artist Luke Ross.
This time around, Maria Hill orders the formation of a new team to save the world from a threat it doesn't even know exists, and so Nick Fury Jr. and good ol' Agent Coulson must recruit a new squad, which will consist of Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk, Mockingbird, Winter Soldier and a new Iron Patriot.

So it looks like a new creative team on Marvel's Secret Avengers, which means a new team, which looks a lot like The Avengers from the movie. This also means no more Captain Britain in a mainstream Marvel comic, so what now for Brian Braddock? Maybe the talk, some time ago, of a commonwealth superhero team will come to fruition. A sort of Excalibur crossed with an Alpha Flight team, I'd buy it!

Betsy Braddock Statue by Bowen Designs

It looks like Bowen Designs are going to make a statue of Betsy Braddock! Hurrah I say! Found these on Statue Marvels, a site where Randy Bowen posts ideas for statues he's thinking of doing to get some feedback from the army of buyers, to see if there is any interest.

They both get my vote, make both, I'd buy them, and who knows, maybe one day he'll make a Meggan one? We can but dream.

Secret Avengers Vol. 1 Graphic Novel by Rick Remender

Secret Avengers volume one by Remender, Hardman & Zircher, contains Secret Avengers #21.1 and #22-25.

Previously I reviewed Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force: Otherworld, which featured Captain Britain, his sister Psylocke, and the rest of her team X-Force. If you've read my review you'll see I was none too pleased with Rick Remender's portrayal of the good captain.

I bought this because it contained Captain Britain, who is now a member of the Secret Avengers, a covert Avengers team, hoping that Rick had done some research into CB, maybe read the Alan Moore/Alan Davis issues, and started writing him as he should.

This graphic novel starts off with Captain America on a rescue mission with Hawkeye. The reason for the mission was for CA to test Hawkeye to see if he was ready to lead his Secret Avengers. They cross swords with various Masters of Evil, Princess Python, Whiplash and the Nick Fury LMD. The long and tall of it is Cap hands the Secret Avengers over to Hawkeye as team leader. The team consisting of Hawkeye, Captain Britain, Beast, Valkyrie, Giant Man, Black Widow, Original Human Torch, and Ant Man.

Rick Remender just does not get Captain Britain, or maybe he doesn't like the good Captain. What ever the reason, I find myself becoming annoyed at his portrayal. Cap's introduction to this GN, started off OK-ish, with a sterotypical fight outside Buckingham palace.
The Queen makes an appearance, and utters the words 'Defeat that hooligan'. Contrary to popular belief, us Brits don't all talk like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, or upper class toffs!

Next you see Captain Britain introduced to the team, a few crossed wires where with a level of arogance CB thinks he's going to lead the team, he's not, it's Hawkeye's team.
Remender paints Captain Britain as either an arrogant bumbling sod, or a punching bag for the villains they face. Sadly for as long as Remender writes Captain Britain, he will always play second fiddle to the other characters in this book. Ant Man was portrayed brilliantly, and even Venom's inclusion in the team was handled well.

Captain Britain now has 'Stealth Mode' in his suit/uniform... what?.. since when did he have stealth mode? Stealth mode involves the main white part of his uniform, and his gloves turning black... erm...? Is it a bird? is it a plane?... no, but we can see a dirty great big red cross flying across the night sky!!!!! really stealthy!

The story itself revolves around robots, lots of robots, all lead by someone called 'Father'. There's LMD's, Deathlok's, Doombot's, Machine Men, Sentinel's etc. All the major robot players are there, apart from Ultron, but there is a Jocasta look-a-like. The Wasp is there as a Deathlok Robot, as well as Miss America, and you're left wondering if it's the real Wasp, or a robot. If it is the real Wasp, then she's been turned into a Deathlok.

The Decendants, as Father calls his own brood, with all the other robot life forms hate the human race, and especially The Avengers, who are plastered everywhere about the hidden robot city, as evil oppressors.

The story itself is not bad in itself, but CB's portrayal ruins it for me, and I would imagine this story may lead into the forthcoming Ultron War, whenever that is?

A fellow Blogger (It Came From Darkmoor), commented on Twitter, that the only good thing about Remender's Secret Avengers is the covers are drawn by Art Adams! He's not too far from the truth really!

Secret Avengers #29 Preview

Well, it looks like AvX is over, or at least will be over, or... um... I'm a little confused how everything fits into the grand scheme of things. This issue of Secret Avengers is due to be released 25th July, and it's members are, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Captain Britain, Beast, Valkyrie, Human Torch, and Venom. Also released around the same time is AvX tie-in, X-Men Legacy where you see a shot of Hawkeye imprisoned by Magik with snake arms, instead of real arms. So you can understand my confusion with continuity, although Secret Avengers stopped being an AvX title.

Here's some pages from Secret Avengers #29...

This looks pretty cool, with the Masters of Evil comprising of some great members. Secret Avengers is turning into the best Avengers title at the moment.
